Its been a Gees Bend spring here in Denver: The Denver Center Theatre Company toasted the multi-generational Alabama quilt-making community with a theatrical stage bow earlier this year, and the Denver Art Museum will continue hosting the exhibit Gees Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt through July 6. But this weekend, the entire Gees Bend Gestalt kicks into high gear when a group of the self-taught quilters from the remote, river-hugged farming community come to visit the DAM for a weekend, bringing the stories of their unique quilts to life.
Meet the ladies, see the exhibit and participate in art-making activities today which also happens to be the museums monthly free day beginning at 10 a.m., during Colorful Quilts! A Gees Bend Family Day. (A quilters forum scheduled for tomorrow is sold out.)The DAM is at 100 West 14th Avenue Parkway; for more information, go to www.denverartmuseum.org or call 720-913-0167.
